On many different construction sites, ladders can only provide assistance in reaching things high up to a certain extent. After a point, ladders become too unstable and prone to issues, and this means that using an aerial life of some sort is needed to reach things that are higher than a ladder can practically reach. Scaffolding takes too long to assemble and position properly for many of the high-reaching tasks, so there are aerial lifts and vehicle-mounted lifts that can fill this gap, but they need to be operated safely by those who are trained.
OSHA Pros offers two different safety courses, one for aerial lifts that include boom lift training and scissor lift training, and one for vehicle-mounted lifts, often referred to as bucket truck operator training. Each of these online courses are 1.5 hours in length and provide important boom lift training or bucket truck operator training to provide for safe operations of these important tools.

Scissor lifts are stable platforms that are typically used indoors and will lift occupants of the lift straight up. The support structure looks like a number of scissors under the lift platform. Boom lifts have multi-part arms that articulates and the platform is mounted at the end of this arm. These are often used outdoors and typically have outriggers for added stability.
