A rigger or signal person, is a worker who guides, hooks/unhooks loads, or connects loads to a structure. The purpose of a rigger/signal person is to ensure the safety of other workers or individuals in fall zones.
To become a qualified rigger one must meet the following criteria: riggers must have a recognized degree, professional standing, or certificate in rigger signalman training OR otherwise have verifiable and ample experience as a rigger/signal person.
While technically riggers do not need an OSHA certification, it is important for all riggers to undergo a rigger and signalman course. Rigger signalman training can ensure that workers are qualified to perform their jobs safely and efficiently.
