Understanding NYC SST Training: What do New Entrants Need to Start Work on an NYC Construction Site?

If you are just starting out your career in New York City’s construction world, then congratulations! You are entering into an exciting world full of possibilities. But you are also entering an exciting challenge that comes with important responsibilities.

You may have some questions, like what training do you need? How do you get started? Keep reading to find out!

What is NYC SST Training for New Entrants?

Let’s start at the beginning, what is NYC SST Training for New Entrants? For new entrants to NYC construction, getting the right training is a legal requirement. If a worker began in the industry after December 1, 2019, they need to complete specific training before setting foot on a job site.

What Training is Required?

The key requirement is the 40-hour NYC SST Training for New Entrants, mandated under Local Law 196. Here’s how it works: every new entrant must first complete a 10-hour OSHA introductory course before starting on the job. Then, within six months of that start date, they need to finish an additional 30 hours of approved training.

Successfully completing all 40 hours is crucial to earning the NYC SST Worker card, which you need to legally work on NYC construction sites that have a Construction Superintendent, Site Safety Coordinator, or Site Safety Manager.

What Does Training Include?

So, what will you be learning in NYC SST Training for New Entrants? The learning experience is comprehensive, covering a range of topics including:

  • OSHA regulations
  • Fall prevention
  • Proper scaffold use
  • Site safety protocols
  • Drug and alcohol awareness
  • And more

The course is designed to equip you with the essential skills and knowledge to navigate the high-risk environment of NYC construction safely.
